Pros
If you love animals, how could you not love working here? You can bring your dog (or cat) to work, and every cube has it's own gate. If you're having a rough day or need a break, pet someone's dog! Ron, the new CEO, I believe really is trying hard to push for change, and his energy and communication is really appreciated. I'm less than a year into my role, but I would say on the whole I love my job and my team and can say the following as pros:
*Depending on what area you're in, I consider this office to be pretty laid back. The teams are mostly young professionals, and there is a good focus on work/life balance (summer Fridays were introduced, which is pretty standard across corporate retail companies). Dress code is San Diego casual
*Culture is one of fun (regular pub events, Halloween parties, etc)
* The corporate campus is beautiful- A few years old, energy efficient, a small but well-equipped gym, a starbucks, and really tasty, healthy and affordable cafeteria food. Many dog parks and walking trails
*They're making steps to improve our benefits. We are eligible for our 401k now 6 months after employment vs 1 year (but still that's a long time), and they haven't announced how that will be implemented (I've been here 6 months now, how do I sign up?). Petco has also agreed to not pass along Healthcare increases to us for 2019 which shows they're taking us seriously
Cons
*Benefits. Our healthcare costs are outrageous- I'm paying 3x more than I was with a previous California retail company. 401k is getting better, maternity is only the bare minimum of what the State of California offers.
*Vacation- not very competitive. I lost 2 additional weeks a year from my previous company coming here. I'd really like to see us improve on this- as long as people get their jobs done, offer more. And not that I roll any over, but it's a bit crazy that you can't. A lot of people save up for bigger vacations (or to cover maternity bc ours doesn't give any extra), and the fact that we can't roll ANY days year to year is crazy. I do appreciate that everything is available on the first day after your anniversary.
*There has been a pretty big lack of females in upper management (was only 1). We've recently hired a few on, so I'm hopeful to see where that goes. But definitely feels like a boys club at the upper levels
*The hiring process was incredibly frustrating. A real lack of communication between recruiters/managers and candidates. I interviewed several times and spent a few months in the process each time.
