Pros

Working with pets and people

Cons

Unethical Management. After working with Petco for a little over a year, I was terminated due to a felony conviction that is over 10 years old. My performance reviews were outstanding. In fact my criminal record only became an issue because of an application that I filled out in connection with a promotion for which I was recommended. Management at the store and my customers were all more than happy with my performance. I gave Petco permission to do a background check when I was hired but they never did one until I applied for the promotion. I never lied about nor attempted to hide my criminal past. Petco would have known about the background all along if the background check that they asked permission to do was done. I did my time for the conviction long ago. Apparently I paid my debt to society but that is somehow not enough for Petco. I was suspended for about a week with no pay or compensation then terminated with no severance pay.

Pros

friendly store managers usually good discounts nostalgic

Cons

Forced to stay short staffed. Couldn't take proper breaks most days as a closing lead unless it was during the first few hours of shift. At the time the regional manager seemed more worried about the aesthetics of the back animal rooms floor that only employees saw when we had ac issues, issues getting access to an exotic vet, and only had enough hours to have two employees working at a time most shift on most days. I only had a couple interactions but that was one of them. Could not call off sick without leaving the store scrambling to find someone to stay open. Also sold improper habitats.
