DEI initiatives that look good on paper undermined by toxic institutional culture - Grad Student Princeton University Employee Review

Pros

Opportunities for funding and travel much more than other graduate programs

Cons

Stipend not livable for the area and seems to account for an assumption that everyone has family they can rely on for supplemental income. DEI initiatives undermined by the University’s dominant white, elitist culture. Many professor’s literacy in social issues is undermined by their inability to actually support diverse students. Most professors and many students are unwilling to rock the boat when it comes toxic workplace and abusive advisor dynamics. If you have chronic illness, the insurance program is incredibly frustrating and makes it impossible to get continuity of care. System is built for undergrad students who have healthcare through parents and not students without insurance or disabled students or the large population of employed graduate students. There is a great number of grad students who move to NYC or Philly, especially BIPOC students who f have come to find Princeton inhospitable to them. It makes finding pockets of diverse grad student community incredibly difficult.
