Pros
The education sector in NYC is large. There are a plethora of different school options (district, charter, independent, etc.) and it can be confusing, overwhelming, and difficult to navigate. However, Brooklyn Prospect is a hidden gem within this ocean of choices. A number of years ago, a friend told me about interviewing at one of their campuses and what she saw during her visit (which are all pros to the organization which resonates today). + High levels of respect, care, and integrity (demonstrated through the interview process, the interactions with educators, and students) + A commitment to diverse student and staff community that is truly an anomaly in the education sector (check out their school demographics, it is incredibly diverse) +One of the only public, non-selective IB schools in the area + Excellent teaching and support structures that support sustainability in the profession (coaching, professional development, network support, etc.) +Preference in the lottery for employees. Yes, while I don't have kids, the fact that so many of the people I work with or in the organization send their own kids to these schools is an anomaly. Honestly, can you tell me another charter network where there is a critical mass of employees sending their kids to the schools they work at? That is a clear signal on the strength and belief in the organization. All of these are only part and parcel of the things that make BPCS great. Very few times in my (short, but in it to win it) career have I been so proud to state that I work in a charter organization in NYC, as the time that I have been at Prospect. I am proud to work here and I am excited to share my commitment to work. If you can get a job here, you would be remiss not to take it...what a wonderful place to be, I feel so fortunate.
Cons
- Benefits Package (yes we all want to make more money). The schedule for teachers at BPCS is in the medium range for educators in the city. However, there is a transparent scale for the teaching side -- which is huge. It is great to know that there is equity in that advancement. Do I want more benefits? Yes. I say benefits here, because I don't think benefits always means money. I would love to see the organization adopt some non-traditional benefits...why, not? But, is the current process fair? Yes. - Branding. I feel like not enough people know about BPCS (which could be good or bad). We need to find ways to get more great ppl in the organization. -
