Pros

Difficult to be fired if you are even passably competent. Or if you are incompetent, in which case you are likely to be promoted.

Cons

Providence is positioning itself to become the Walmart of healthcare, with little to no regard for its employees, no interest in process improvements, and priorities of growth and brand over service and quality. Millions are invested in sponsorships and mergers while its employees become increasing dissatisfied and the basic framework of its logistical organization continues to crumble. The exteriors of the buildings are painted and renovated while the workspaces of the employees deteriorate. Management outspokenly ignored the advice of paid outside consultants while still demanding the results the consultants estimated could be achieved by those changes. Reluctantly playing catch-up to the rest of the industry in terms of compensation and benefits, while discouraging unionization.

Pros

(This is for Providence St Vincent Medical Center in PDX) - staffing ratios - break nurses - ONA union - coworkers on my unit are very helpful and kind (can’t speak for every unit though)

Cons

- upper management hates the nursing union - we are short on many supplies on weekend night shifts - crappy insurance - my unit’s manager is almost never there, they’re always on vacation or working remote. This makes our manager very out of touch with the unit’s needs
