Pros

Free Stock — honestly that is it. Their benefits are just OK.

Cons

I used to be an Assistant Deli Manager and I have stepped down to be a Deli Associate. There is a very strong disconnect between lower manager and upper managers. Store managers claimed time after time that they care about you, but their actions are the absolute opposite. When you become a manager you basically have to sacrifice your life to Publix. If you cannot come in to help on your days off you will get punished. If you cannot stay late, even if you have a doctors appt, you will get punished. If people call out in your department (happens almost daily) you have to cover for them, no matter what. One store manager called me multiple times on my day off to come in after I told me I hair prior arranged obligations. He even threatened my job over the phone. He has so many resources to bring in help, but he chose to harass and threaten me. Because of this and other related situations he gave me such low scores on my evaluation it made me not eligible for a raise—which you can only get once a year. Keep in mind that I have come in several times on my day off to help—this way ignored. Leaving a bad taste in my mouth is an understatement. I’m currently seeking employment elsewhere. I don’t even think Publix deserves the respect of giving them a 2 weeks notice.

Pros

Good compensation including not just standard pay, but also end of year bonus 80 hours for hourly associates, 8% of your annual earnings granted to you in free company stock thru which quarterly dividends are paid, ok 401k, and gift card and other associate coupons. Good stability and growth. Good company culture.

Cons

Can be slow and resistant to change. Uses some antiquated systems and software that should have been replaced years ago. Does some things that don't make sense. Some managers can be good, while others not very good. Although these cons may be true for a lot of companies. All roads eventually lead to Lakeland where they are headquartered. Geography can be a big one if you are not a Florida native. If you don't want to live in Florida for some legitimate reasons, there can be limited job options in other states, especially if you aren't interested in retail or warehouse jobs. Standard retail negatives about not having a lot of holidays off.
