Pros
Lots of opportunities for advancement or different types of positions in the company. Good benefits and pension contribution whether in union or non-union role (in permanent roles - F/T and some P/T positions based on hours). Management roles receive AIPs. ESOP, EAP available to all. Lots of brilliant people work there - at the front lines and the various departments. Many types of roles from office to warehouse to on-road. As a national company, opportunities for roles across the country are available. Unionized members can easily apply for transfers to other locations - across the country as well.
Cons
Training in all roles is lacking: from front-line to management. If you want to succeed in any role, you have to advocate for your recognition and development, you have to find your necessary knowledge and skillset, you have to seek out your mentors. Leadership is hit or miss. Many managers rose to their roles from within the ranks. Some are wonderful, knowledgeable, care for their employees and strive to take care of their teams and meet objectives but often struggle against upper and middle management where self-aggrandizing behaviour and large ego determines the focus of different departments and operations.
