Pros
- The office got some nice view of the city and also Alcatraz (which also make you feel like you are working in a prison most days). However, other offices might not have such a nice view. If you are not an executive or have your own office, it does not matter. - Free coffee and tea in the kitchen. They have the latest and greatest coffee machine so it might save you a trip to the coffee shop (for some people). - Very few coworkers actually are nice, hardworking individuals that you can really depend on and work with. Unfortunately most of the good ones have already left or let go. - A very intense work environment. It used to be a great collaborative environment where people work towards a common goal. Not anymore now, but you will learn a lot from being involved in it and will be very useful in your next job.
Cons
- An extremely TOP HEAVY management. They keep hiring external sources for managerial and executive level despite their saying of 'Promoting from within'. This cause the middle and the executive layer to be very ineffective in terms of company goals and direction (too many chefs in the kitchen). There are a lot of power struggles going on, managers and executives vying for power and rank, and not really care about the employees who will suffer as a result. Company direction keeps changing with people getting their tasks reassigned and new titles created just for the sake of having someone there. Group of people were told to follow a 'pecking order' and completely undermines other executives/managers. You might ask why they do this? It would seem if you are high enough, you are relatively 'safe' from any reorganization decisions (FACT: There has never been anybody from the management team that was laid off in reorganization events). If you are the boss, you got to relax more, 'be a king', abuse the 'work from home' privilege, play golf (and nerf gun warfare), and only deal with issues (or clients) when it suits their need (like giving ONLY good news). All while earning great amount of money (and bonus) in the process. - A place that thrives on favoritism and nepotism. About the only way you ever will get promoted or even considered for promotion is if you know someone higher up or if you belong to a certain 'group'. There are some individuals acting as managers and executives who care more about image and personal preference, rather than qualifications, ignoring inputs from various perspective. Others got promoted due to happenstance or luck. Only very very few got to where they are because they actually are capable of the responsibilities, and worked hard towards it. Unfortunately most, if not all of them already left the position anyway for greener pasture. Management to be ineffective in managing/handling their department/group, and the ones who got the blame is the employees underneath. - Mistreatment of employees, mismanagement, and (depending on office location) terrible work culture. Micromanagement is normal here and double standard is rampant at every level of management (as already mentioned by other reviews - yes, they do happen almost on daily basis). Again, This does not apply if you are favorites. Bad behavior from favorite employees were overlooked, even to the point of justifying it in front of client, whereas smallest mistake from those who are not favorites got made into a big deal. Company bullying does happen from time to time (with the addition of double standard). Few examples: employees coming in late (due to weather or already sent a prior notice) got warned/mocked while the managers spent almost half a day out in the mall or doing non-work related tasks, employees got reprimanded for reading a news site while waiting for processes to complete (or when work is relatively quiet) when the supervisor/manager proceeded to browse ebay, got busy with their fantasy games (football, baseball, basketball, you name it) or inviting everyone to watch non work-related youtube videos on his/her screen. If you just want to come to work, do your job, and go home, it will be a challenging task to do just that without worrying about anything else. - The lies. There was absolutely no trust between the executives/management and the employees. This might not be the company's fault and just a few of individuals (or groups), but these individuals are the executive/manager and have a big say in the direction of the company. For a company who pride themselves as being 'transparent' to their employees and take care of them, the treatment of the lower rank employees showed otherwise. This does not apply if you are one of the 'favorites'. They flat out refuse to help with you if you have any issues and absolutely will not hesitate to throw you under the bus if someone needs to 'take the blame' (or if the management does not like you). They would break promises, accuse you of things without evidence whatsoever (and go to length to justify you are doing it), make you 'run around the block' just to get you to where you want, and straight up lie about decisions or practices done by the management team. Perhaps they thought the employees will never know or do not talk to each other. - To make things worse, at this point of writing, there was absolutely no certified Human Resource personnel (the group of people in HR department are not HR and they just "execute what was told by the management team") and all of the senior legal counsel have left the company. You have technically no one to go to for reporting individuals' behavior and any types of harassment (or mistreatment). Any of these reports will be handled very poorly, if at all. Ironically, they make everyone go through sexual harassment training every year just for compliance. - It is no longer a start-up company, but it still acts like one. Company also comes with the flaws of a start-up and without any of the benefits. Salary gap between employees and the management level is very large, and there is no justification of it (just look at the Salary section between managerial roles and those who are not). Every year of reviews (if there is one), the employees just got pressurized to do more work (and put more hours) with the same amount of pay (and told they were not working hard enough the year prior to justify no salary adjustment) so the management can enjoy bonuses and increase in their salary because they managed the department budget 'so well'. A lot of people put insane amount of hours working without any appreciation, except those in the 'favorites' list (which will then got promoted faster than anyone else). Forget about work-life balance, the amount of work that you have and also the stress of having to deal with the management team is enough to make you feel like you are working in a prison (explains the first point). Benefit and salary definitely not up to par with the market, and there is virtually no chance to grow your career here. You might, however, have a chance to make it upwards if you work like a robot and do not mind getting your nose as brown as possible. There are some people who have done it and manage to actually move here (so this should be a pro?) - There is virtually no formal training for most departments. You are expected to be thrown in a fire in the middle of chaos and do a great job at it. If you manage to handle it, then 'that is what you're hired to do'. If you cannot cope with it, they will ultimately say this is not working out. At most, you are shadowing a colleague, getting your hands dirty with the application and the tasks, then you are given the task like everyone else and put in your place (they will use the meaning of the word 'seniority' to its fullest extent). The bosses really LOVE to play the rank card like they have superiority complex. A lot of other reviews already mentioned this but I will say it again: The morale of the employees are at all time low because of many different factors, and the management team apparently do not care enough or know what to do with it. Sooner or later, people (internal and clients) are going to leave and find better place to work for/with. This is coming from a company that pride itself in the quality of service provided for its customers. If you want to get some experience in eDiscovery, hoping to move up in your career, forget this place.
