Pros
Culture is king at Red Hat. The company and employees take it so seriously my 9 year old's life goal is to work at Red Hat. The recent lay off's and employees empathetic reactions really highlighted this. Red Hatters believe in Red Hat, no question. Our current CEO, Matt Hicks is a strong leader with a strong vision, picking up where Jim Whitehurst left off. Compensation is close top of range, if you are a high performer. All benefits are best in class. PTO policy is generous, and PTO is strongly encouraged. Work is clearly defined at Red Hat. High performance is expected. The work is highly technical and employees are expected to be comfortable with that technology. Training is provided. If you are performing, you can expect raises and level promotions regularly. You are expected to advocate actively for yourself, and if you do you will be rewarded. (This is not comfortable for everyone.) Your leadership is also expected to actively advocate for you. Senior leadership has been going through a lot of transition. That change has been tough. It is obvious to me however that these are very positive changes. I strongly believe and where the company is going and the leaders I will type there.
Cons
If you aren't comfortable in high tech environments, Red Hat isn't the place for you. (That can either be a pro or con.) Advancement is unclear and non-traditonal in non-technical competencies. One is expected to find their own career path and pursue it. This can be very uncomfortable for those that expect formula based advancement. (I don't find either of these things a con, but they are things others should be aware of. They are common to big-tech environments.)
