Leaving Ross was the best decision I ever made. - Store Manager Ross Stores Employee Review

Pros

There isn’t much. Compensation. Benefits.

Cons

Work life balance- you are the only salaried manager in the building so anything that doesn’t get done- which will be a lot due to the terrible payroll model, will fall on you. I spent a ton of time on the register and completing recovery due to not having enough payroll to properly staff the store. All Ross stores are an absolute mess. Hours of operation are terrible- most Ross stores open significantly earlier and stay open later than the competition. During the holiday season you will be open until TWO in the morning. No one shops at Ross at two in the morning. Most Ross stores are in lower income neighborhoods so safety was a huge concern too. Favoritism is incredibly prevalent, especially in the Chicago market. You’ll only get promoted if you’re in with the District Managers and Zone Managers- no matter how hard you’ve worked and the results you’ve had over the years.

Pros

All of my coworkers were wonderful. No high school drama. Boss was flexible and understanding, although he always liked it if you said you could work more hours. The employee discount is pretty awesome. The work wasn't bad and rude customers were rare.

Cons

There was pressure to come in even when you were sick. Pay wasn't the greatest; it usually stayed ahead of minimum wage, but by no means kept up with inflation. Visits from corporate often meant a new change in procedures that had been working and demands that were somewhat unreasonable given the constraints of the layout or number of employees available.

Pros

Even though this is with my store specifically I got really lucky with my coworkers. Every season change there is 40% off for about a week other than that is 20%. They also have scholarship opportunities.

Cons

It’s a really physical job, sometimes it’s so busy that you can’t even take a break especially during Christmas season, you WILL debate working there during that time. The store hours are horrible and since most of the time were understaffed we won’t leave until almost midnight just cleaning up.
