Pros

The salary is higher than average for an Assistant Buyer in NYC.

Cons

The retail industry is tough and toxic in general, but Ross takes it to a new level. I’ve never worked somewhere with more mind games and tactics from management to convince you that you are bad at your job. Expect constant lies and manipulation from management. Everything is a test and you’re set up to fail. Also expect to do the job of two levels above you to get promoted. In order to succeed here, in my experience, you cannot care about people’s well-being or helping anyone grow and succeed. Reviews are fabricated, performance plans are handed out like candy, and hearing people take leaves of absence or quit due to mental health is sadly a common occurrence. Buyers and above openly degrade Assistant/Associate level through disrespectful comments in the office. HR will do nothing to help or support you in your role. You can certainly build a strong foundation of knowledge at Ross but know when to leave and take your skill set to an organization that will value you.

Pros

Even though this is with my store specifically I got really lucky with my coworkers. Every season change there is 40% off for about a week other than that is 20%. They also have scholarship opportunities.

Cons

It’s a really physical job, sometimes it’s so busy that you can’t even take a break especially during Christmas season, you WILL debate working there during that time. The store hours are horrible and since most of the time were understaffed we won’t leave until almost midnight just cleaning up.
