Unsatisfying work - Part Time Lecturer Rutgers University Employee Review

Pros

I teach in the humanities. It is very challenging work, and you have a lot of control over your own performance. Rutgers' main pros may be a diverse student body and a large library.

Cons

Pay for a PTL, even at a big university, is very low: on the order of 5K per course. Most teaching (particularly early on) is intensive, and your per hour is low. You also get last-choice in what courses you teach. Classrooms vary from relatively sophisticated to muggy and cramped. Students often unmotivated. Department and university management (as it were) is uninvolved.

Pros

co-workers are super nice, friendly and collaborative. Good flexibility in work arrangements. My immediate boss is nice.

Cons

Morale is quite low, and turnover is high. We are losing good people and goals are not being met. Senior Leader tell us to do more with less, and do not want constructive feedback. They don't lead by example, taking elaborate trips instead of being present and supporting staff. Rules don't apply to them. So disappointing, not what you would expect from a public university.
