Pros

I was given a tremendous amount of autonomy and decision making opportunity. As a self-directed individual I enjoyed this freedom to pursue excellence without interference. I relied on my own commitment to intellectual standards and academic integrity. My direct supervisor was very professional and helpful, on those few occasions I was able to meet with him.

Cons

The pay, for the amount of time and effort required, is inadequate. I wish there had been an opportunity to interface with the regular, full time professors in the department. However, the biggest drawback for me was the rather sketchy quality of the students. I taught masters' level classes for 3 years. Student lack of ability to engage in critical thinking and their dismal writing skills were truly appalling. It often seemed I was working with college freshman, in a remedial class, rather than with graduate students. Most discouraging was the fact that, every semester, one or more students engaged in plagiarism. The students took great offense at being held accountable. Happily, the Dean did support me in dealing with these situations.

Pros

co-workers are super nice, friendly and collaborative. Good flexibility in work arrangements. My immediate boss is nice.

Cons

Morale is quite low, and turnover is high. We are losing good people and goals are not being met. Senior Leader tell us to do more with less, and do not want constructive feedback. They don't lead by example, taking elaborate trips instead of being present and supporting staff. Rules don't apply to them. So disappointing, not what you would expect from a public university.
