Mokena - Machinist SMS group Employee Review

- Virtually everybody is miserable (many cool co-workers, but there is a tangible cloud of misery everywhere) - Poorly managed (mess, clutter, lack of direction, shop guys begging for tooling + supplies and never getting it, etc.) - During the interview, I was clear that I was inexperienced and would need on-the-job training, yet I did not make it through the probation period... due to my inexperience. I wish they didn't hire me, as I left a decent job to work there, and was absolutely transparent about my low skill level. My wife and 3 month old son did not have health insurance because I was let go for a problem that they were aware of within 15 seconds of meeting me. - In my short 3 months at SMS, 3 or 4 people (not counting me) were fired / did not make it through the probation period. Ultimately, it seems like they are casting a wide net in terms of hiring, and getting rid of everybody who is not top-notch (I'm almost certain if your are good enough to stay employed here, you are being underpaid, but I don't and couldn't know that 100%) -They kept me around until the last legal day of my probation period having me do the crappiest jobs. I swept and cleaned floors for 5 straight days (not that bad, but come on). It was very clear, in hindsight, that they decided to let me go, but figured they could have me knock out some of the worst tasks available so their other employees wouldn't have to deal with them. This should paint a pretty clear picture about how much they respect they have for their workers. Things may have changed since I had been there, but if you're hired on, make sure you're willing to work there, and that you're not burning any bridges at your old place of employment. If they're still hiring en-masse and letting 95% of people go, you can imagine that you are not going to be valued or respected.
