Pros

SLU had a culture of valuing people - students, faculty, and staff when I began to work there four years ago, Their phrase, Higher Purpose, Greater Good resonated with me. I posted it in my office..

Cons

I have worked at SLU for four years. During this time, I have received three Exceeds Expectations Performance Reviews. Since the layoffs last March, I have taken on greater responsibilities, comparable to those in the next level of the organization. At the end of all of this, my hourly wage has gone up 70 cents per hour in four years. Today the head of my department told me that (s)he can't offer me any chance for advancement, even if someone in our department leaves, because of SLU's fiscal situation. I feel very devalued. SLU is a hypocritical disaster area. The President pontificates endlessly, while keeping the same people who were the top administrators during all of the years the fiscal crisis developed. They still have their fat paychecks and big titles, but someone like me has no chance for advancement. Many of my direct service colleagues had their positions eliminated last March, and that continues to happen. All the folks whose positions were eliminated did was show loyalty to the University and give the students excellent service, but their positions were eliminated, while the fat cats who made the decisions who created the fiscal situation cried crocodile tears for their more modestly paid colleagues (who were now out of work) all the way to the bank. There are days when SLU literally makes me sick.

Pros

The university offers a lot of opportunities that make the student experience very memorable, such as career treks, mock interviews, career fairs, and different engagement events and workshops.

Cons

Overall, the employee experience was challenging. The institution faced significant financial difficulties during my tenure, including recurring layoffs and no salary increases over a two-year period, which contributed to ongoing uncertainty and low morale. Leadership and communication were problematic particularly within my team. High turnover, limited transparency around staffing and role changes, workplace gossip, and unprofessional interpersonal dynamics. When a team loses more than 50% of its staff within a two-year span, it suggests deeper cultural and management issues that warrant attention. The physical work environment also presented challenges. Persistent heating and cooling problems resulted in office temperatures fluctuating dramatically from uncomfortably hot to excessively cold temperatures with little consistency from day to day. Lastly, compensation was a frequent concern among employees. Many staff members worked second jobs or actively sought opportunities elsewhere due to salaries that were not competitive with the market.
