Pros

- A lot of great work and people to learn from for new engineers just out of college.

Cons

I want to preface this by saying that Sargent & Lundy is a large company and its culture can vary depending on where you are at and who you work with. That being said, my experience has taught me that this company has a toxic men's club culture. I ended up leaving due to a sexual assault that I did not feel was handled well by the company. The culture at this company is a direct contributor to my experience. The instance in which I had reported to HR and ended up leaving because of was not even the first person that I had to deal with. The first case was my very first year working just after college and I had no idea how to deal with it. I do have regrets in regards to that situation, but unfortunately I would have another opportunity to correct my actions. Whether this is more of a problem overall in the industry is a different discussion, but Sargent & Lundy did nothing to make me feel comfortable in coming forward the first time and the second time, I only came forward because I could not physically be at the office or around the person and it was either I report or I had to leave my job. Every minute of the experience was traumatizing and I had to report to multiple different people and it lasted for way too long. The entire time I was made to feel like I was doing something wrong, and afterwards my entire work environment took a turn for the worse. I will say, there are other criticisms I have about the company outside of this, but I was always under the impression that with the right team some of these issues could be corrected and that the company does give you the tools to do that. Upper management does have some issues with communication and transparency, but I think those are things that can be worked out. The overall culture however will take a lot of time to adjust, and I will not be returning and am unable to recommend this company.

Sargent & Lundy Response

We appreciate your past service with S&L. We value the opinions of all former and current employees, and yours are no exception. However, we are disappointed that this is not an accurate reflection of S&L’s culture and disposition of handling employee concerns. We do want to take this opportunity to acknowledge and reaffirm our strong commitment to our employees and providing a workplace that is free from unlawful and improper harassment, violence and that promotes respect for others. We have an established Non-Harassment & Workplace Violence Policy along with an Employee Concerns Program and take these matters very seriously. In addition, S&L forbids retaliation against anyone for reporting conduct prohibited by our Non-Harassment & Workplace Violence procedure, assisting in making a complaint, participating in an investigation, filing a discrimination charge, or otherwise pursuing their rights under the law. HR promptly and thoroughly investigates all claims and the particular situation described above was no exception; appropriate action was taken.

Pros

Decent pay and interesting projects that allow for good professional development.

Cons

Absolutely horrendous work-life balance. I have been at the company for almost 20 years and their lack of support and flexibility for parents is incredibly disappointing. Going to the office requirements are unrealistic with little kids, and some of the newly minted managers are on a power trip, micromanaging high performers and quoting pto policies if you need to run 30min errands midday.
