Pros

One of the best reasons is the location. However, Scripps is also beginning to have a national reputation for forward thinking. The CEO is very competent. Their compensation is fair for a health care system. Leadership's committment to communicating with managers and above is tremendous for an organization of it's size. Most employees I dealt with had strong moral. Scripps is also becoming the dominant healthcare organization in the San Diego region. Scripps recognizes that work is not everything and goes to great lengths to ensure that employee satisfaction is monitored. Executive bonus payments are in part based on employee satisfaction scores.

Cons

Almost all meaningful decisions are made at the senior executive level. There are very opportunities to participate in decision making, even as a senior director or vice president. Like most large organizations, there are competing factions within Scripps Health that vy for influence with senior leadership. This internal competition seems to be almost encouraged by the CEO. As a result, there is a culture of secrecy and "scheming" among the senior executives. There are limited opporunities for advancement. Most leadership positions are held by individuals who are long entrenched and will not be moving on soon. Also, Scripps has a history of hiring from the outside to fill leadership positions.

Pros

Honestly, the only real positives were the beautiful location near Torrey Pines and the incredible coworkers I built strong relationships with—dedicated, hardworking people who truly support one another.

Cons

If I could give Scripps a negative rating, I would. I’m in my mid-30s and have worked in multiple health systems across the U.S., and this was by far the worst experience I’ve had—largely due to the leadership culture. I frequently worked well beyond my job scope because of inadequate departmental support (functioning as the data analyst for the department, even though that was not my hired position). Despite consistently going above and beyond—essentially functioning as a team of one in a role that typically has 2–3 staff at other centers—my efforts were neither recognized nor valued. Instead, I was often talked down to and disrespected. To make matters worse, I worked as a team of one and was expected to “show up as a leader” without the title, compensation, authority, or respect to match. Over my year there, I experienced unprofessional behavior, including leadership accidentally sending me text messages gossiping about me with inaccurate information, with no apology to follow. When I raised concerns, I was told, “I don’t want to hear about this anymore.” When I requested time off due to burnout after a denied PTO request, I was told there was “no reason” for me to feel burned out and that “all I ever do is complain.”
