Pros

Very free work environment without people micromanaging you. Plenty of PTO time and paid holidays.

Cons

Can be very long hours. Unrealistic goals each year. Very set in old ways and not willing to move to the present.

Pros

PTO and Holidays are plentiful. Most coworkers are fun and nice if they last. Volunteers are a pleasure to serve and deeply care about you.

Cons

This company is an absolute nightmare from start to finish. You will be set up to fail from the moment you walk in the door. Training is minimal to nonexistent, and any promises of professional development are empty. You will have to jump through hoops just to get the training you are supposed to receive, and even then, it is often completely inadequate. Instead of learning, you are expected to fend for yourself in a disorganized and chaotic environment. Coworkers will do their best to help you but will be frustrated as they have their own work to do. You will be guilt-tripped into donating repeatedly, no matter your personal situation, and if you do not comply, prepare to be made to feel like you are letting the entire team down. Meetings are randomly added to your calendar with no forewarning, and you will also be expected to show up to meetings that are not even on your calendar, wasting your time and energy. The worst part? The management is completely toxic. Public and private humiliation are regular occurrences. They will throw insults and profanity at you without a second thought, and if you are unlucky enough to disagree with them, you will quickly learn that it is their way or the highway. Every little thing you do will be questioned. The atmosphere here is one of fear and submission. On my third day here, I was brought into a meeting where my coworkers were being yelled at and scolded like little children for not hitting goals. Verbal abuse is tolerated and even endorsed by higher-ups, who brush it off by saying, ‘at least you are not being physically assaulted.’ You will be expected to follow plans set by management, even if they do not make sense or are not working. But if things go wrong, do not expect any support. You will be blamed, shamed, and degraded for something that was beyond your control. Any hope for recognition is non-existent—do not count on bonuses, gifts, or even a simple thank you from Council. Any raise you receive will only be due to the state-mandated wage increases. If you are lucky, you might get a generic email or a quick mention in a meeting, but that is about it. Turnover here is extremely high. Whether it is people quitting in frustration or being fired for not hitting impossible targets, the company cannot keep anyone. Expect to be put on a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) for missing unrealistic goals that are designed to set you up for failure. The company values numbers over people, and if you do not deliver, you will be shown the door. Management only cares about the quantity of kids recruited, while caring very little about a quality program. I was once told that customer service should be the last priority. The job itself is centered entirely around increasing youth membership, no matter how much they try to downplay it. If you do not hit those numbers, your job is in jeopardy. And if you do manage to hit the targets, it is still a miserable experience with little to no reward or recognition. Management is stuck in a past that no longer works, running things with outdated methods that only serve to keep morale low and productivity non-existent. Their focus is on micromanagement, controlling every aspect of your work, and punishing employees who do not meet their unrealistic expectations. Honestly, if you are considering working here, consider again. It is not worth the mental and emotional toll it will take on you. The toxic culture, lack of support, and constant pressure make this a company you want to avoid at all costs. Look elsewhere, because you will be much better off.

Pros

Free summer camp if you have kids, and they’re Scouts.

Cons

The management at Seneca Waterways Council are more focused on money than on the kids. They don’t have any interest in providing quality program, the are focused only on getting more money from their donors and from kid’s families. At the height of COVID they could have been working to connect kids, and help them overcome the struggles of the pandemic, but instead they spent all their time trying to milk money out of people. Thoroughly disappointed.
