Pros

Sentara has multiple locations for OPPT and good benefit packages. I have worked with a wide variety of people from diverse backgrounds and age groups. Every day is something new.

Cons

Sentara OPPT is moving towards shorter treatment times, stressing productivity above all else. Clinics are extending hours and forcing long-standing therapists to change their schedules. 24 days of PTO are advertised on job listings, but salaried employees are forced to use PTO for holidays and weather-related clinic closures. According to recent information from HR, Sentara is required to pay exempt employees for a full day without utilizing PTO after the employee works half of their shift. However, management has been using PTO for any hours missed regardless of how much work was done on the given day. Snow closures forced us to use PTO, and now management is threatening to recall approved vacation time due to low PTO banks depleted by weather closures. Patient satisfaction surveys with questions about factors outside of the employees control weigh HEAVILY on performance reviews, causing the longest serving therapists to receive decreased raise amounts from previous years.

Pros

The team I was on was small but it had good people. My direct manager and her boss were great, but everyone above them were horribly disorganized and incompetent. More on that under cons. Pay was fine, slightly above the average. But raises were inconsistent. The ability to work from home was great. It was rare to be asked to work overtime, so work life balance was good.

Cons

Disorganized upper management who thought they knew better than the folks working in the weeds every day. There were multiple times that they would implement a change that my team would strongly recommend against, but it was shoehorned in anyway. Months later they would come back and say “that was actually a bad idea” and we would have to fix their mistakes, despite warning them against it in the beginning. How well you get trained also depends on your department. My team worked with other teams at Sentara that were often attempting to do things that could have put the company in legal jeopardy, but they were never told not to do it.
