Pros

At least 1 annual raise, you get to work with good PTs typically, you are provided with a MedBridge account so you can get continuing education this way

Cons

Sentara is now forcing PTs to do 30 minute evaluations, see 3-4 patients an hour during treatment sessions, and they are only focused on productivity, NOT patient care. They ask their PTs to bill unethically with Medicare. While they advertise 21 days of PTO, they make you take your PTO for all holidays or if the clinic is closed due to weather. They recently reduced mothers’ pumping time to only 15 minutes and told postpartum moms that if they wanted longer than 15 minutes they would have to take the rest as PTO (aka another 10-15 minutes.) They also just removed our documentation time, we used to have a 30 minute lunch and 30 minutes to document in the middle of the day, but now we only have a 30 minute lunch in the middle of the day, whether you work a 10 hour shift or an 8 hour shift. Additionally, they require you to track your own productivity. At the end of every day you have to count every single patient and unit and put it into a tracker along with how many hours you worked. Sentara also changed our pay structure to instead of being salary, we are now basically hourly. We found out about this change on a Friday and it was implemented the following Monday. Do not work for this company, they do not care about you and will burn you out.

Pros

Cytotechnologists here are compensated more competitively than at other hospitals in the area. The organization offers excellent benefits, including generous PTO, sick time, and maternity leave. Depending on your role within the department, there may also be opportunities to support other Sentara hospitals, providing additional variety and experience. Additionally, the cytotechnologists in the department are wonderful colleagues and a pleasure to work with.

Cons

The management within the Cytology department is highly disappointing. While the initial hiring experience is positive, the treatment by management tends to change quickly afterward. There appears to be noticeable favoritism, which contributes to a challenging work environment. Additionally, cytotechnologists often feel limited in their ability to seek other opportunities due to the specialized nature of the field and the lack of local job options, leading many to remain in the position despite ongoing dissatisfaction. There is a lack of transparency, with staff often left unaware of important happenings within the pathology, histology, and cytology department.
