Disappointing - Consultant Slalom Employee Review

Pros

A great opportunity to get a tour of local companies from the inside. Slalom is very proud of their frat house culture that promotes after hours camaraderie fueled by lots of alcohol. You are guaranteed to run into a Slalom consultant in hottest late night venues in the city. Consultants get rewarded for arranging happy hours. Skipping social events is frowned upon. There is an annual drink-a-thon weekend, which is a ton of fun to go once.

Cons

Project work is mostly staff augmentation. Consultants get harassed if they dare to point out their work is not meaningful or challenging. Any constructive criticism towards the project or company leaders is received negatively. There are no opportunities for advancement or learning. Consultants rarely get stretch roles or opportunities to grow professionally. The management team is cliquey and not transparent in their communication. Odd for a team of people who claim to be organizational effectiveness "experts". Promotions are based on ones ability to become friends with one of the leaders and/or to endure boring assignments without complaints. People who leave or complain are labeled as someone who 'failed to understand consulting.' Work-life balance is hugely dependent on the location of the client. Majority of the clients are in the suburbs and require long commutes.

Pros

people are very kind and its a great network to then have for life

Cons

I had 5 managers in 4 years, 3 of which promised me a promotion which I never got I was strung along in a seperate global team for a year and a half and then when I finally was moved to that group they fired 80% of us it's now an up or out company and people are leaving faster than business is coming in, that's been happening for 2 yrs my mental health was so bad i had two burnouts in a single year my last manager emotionally abused me and made me feel like i was a terrible person. I left believing that was why I was fired until i chatted with another former employee of this manager work life balance WAS a thing and in the last two years it's now that consultants are also responsible for selling, travel is a non-negotiable but expectations for travel are not transparent and can impact your yearly review, straight up not enough work and then senior management will make you feel bad for it
