Pros

Spent most of career in private/startup company sales and loved pace and autonomy. Expected public company to limit autonomy and how to get job done but that is not the case when I started working at Smartsheet. Found out it was very much like a fast moving/growing startup with just way more business and more opportunities for high income. Fast moving, innovative, and market leading company. Promotes from within. Electric team culture and high pay.

Cons

Company is growing quickly, and so with growth comes lots of situations where you have to quickly adapt, learn on your feet, and track down answers which can be difficult remotely. But once you get ramped up those issues dissipate.

Pros

- Remote work - Genuinely talented and collaborative individual contributors across data science and analytics - Interesting problem space with real product and customer data to work with

Cons

- BI leadership does not have hands-on data science experience, which showed in how projects were scoped, evaluated, and prioritized. - Lack of clear leadership direction for the data science function. Priorities shifted frequently, and long-term strategy was hard to pin down, which made it difficult to invest in impactful work. - Career development conversations did not match outcomes. In my case, a promotion was discussed and promised by the leadership, and I was laid off shortly after. Whether that reflects poor planning or poor faith, it left me questioning the integrity of the process. - Transparency around organizational decisions was limited, which eroded trust on the team.
