Pros
- Remote work
- Genuinely talented and collaborative individual contributors across data science and analytics
- Interesting problem space with real product and customer data to work with
Cons
- BI leadership does not have hands-on data science experience, which showed in how projects were scoped, evaluated, and prioritized.
- Lack of clear leadership direction for the data science function. Priorities shifted frequently, and long-term strategy was hard to pin down, which made it difficult to invest in impactful work.
- Career development conversations did not match outcomes. In my case, a promotion was discussed and promised by the leadership, and I was laid off shortly after. Whether that reflects poor planning or poor faith, it left me questioning the integrity of the process.
- Transparency around organizational decisions was limited, which eroded trust on the team.
