Pros

I have worked at Southwest airlines for 5.5 years. I am considered a high performer and I have been shoulder tapped several times for new roles. I drank the kool aide when I first joined the company but please trust me when I say, Southwest is not a place to grow your career. 1.) Flight benefits 2.) Really great 401K Match 3.) Some really great people but overworked

Cons

1.) Southwest lacks diversity in leadership roles and actively overlook POC for roles when considering Senior Manager and above positions. 2.) Southwest is a place where you will have to spend 3+ years before you are promoted. Promotions are not based on hard work but rather who you know. 3.) Working hard and creating great work does not matter at Southwest. What matters is who you suck up to. That is the only thing that will get you promoted. 4.) The culture at SWA was really fun when I first joined 5 years ago. But since then, consultants have taken over the company and the company culture has changed for the worse. 5.) In past years, we use to be at the top of the "Best Places to Work in America" list. We've dropped a lot. Internal Employee satisfactions scores are ABYSMAL. 6.) For the past two years, most of us worked from home. WFH policies across the department are not all equal. 7.) There is no work life balance. During COVID, most of us were working 12 hours a day. 8.) Salaries are ridiculously low. On average, someone in my role at SWA makes about $115 to $130. That same role, people outside of SWA would make about $150 to $165. 9.) We have flight benefits but no PTO to even use them. 10.) It has become a revolving door at SWA. They only talk about who they are hiring but the company is bleeding heads and no one even mentions. Literally, I hear about 2 to 3 people have left the company on a weekly basis.

Pros

The company offers competitive travel benefits, good pay, and the opportunity to work with many dedicated employees. The brand has a strong reputation, and there is potential for a positive work environment if leadership consistently lives up to the company's stated values.

Cons

Southwest Airlines has the potential to be a great company, but the workplace culture falls short of its public image. In my experience as an employee in HR I see the microaggressions are common, and employees of color face barriers to career growth and advancement that are not equally experienced by everyone. Leadership lacks transparency, communication is inconsistent, and employees are often left without clear explanations for important decisions. There is a disconnect between the company's stated commitment to diversity and inclusion and what is experienced in the workplace. The organization would be a much better place to work if leadership fostered a culture of accountability, transparency, respect, and equitable opportunities for all employees.
