Thanks for your feedback and sorry you did not have a more positive experience. Teaching is a demanding career and we are very aware that work-life balance can be hard. This is true in every school setting and is particularly true in the first year of teaching when there is so much to learn. We stress that diligent organization and planning, making full use of non-teaching periods each day, and coordinating with grade-level teams to share responsibilities, are all critical to maintaining reasonable hours. Besides training in time management, we also offer benefits such as free, online therapy and medical visits, exercise classes onsite at schools, and emergency childcare — and teachers have a total of 56 days (11+ weeks) of paid time off each year. School leaders at Success Academy have significant experience in classrooms and as instructional leaders — at least four years as in the classroom and at least one year as instructional leaders. I’m sorry to hear you did not have a good experience with yours — all of us benefit from feedback and it is important to have a frank discussion if you are not responding well to your school leader’s style of management. We do treat teaching as a team sport at SA because we know it is hard. Our teachers collaborate closely with their grade-level teams and receive coaching and feedback from their Senior Leaders and Assistant Principals so they are never alone in figuring out challenges. While a minority of teachers experience this approach as “micromanaging,” most teachers welcome the support and collaboration!
