Cons
Very high-stress environment due to bad processes and entrenched employees. "Good 'ol boy network" in full force. New employees are expected to serve those with seniority regardless of experience or ability. Extreme incompetence in business analysis and project management due to poor quality employees. Software development managers are non-technical and responsible for a hostile work environment. Very unfriendly, unhappy co-workers who never want to hang out after work and won't even give you a ride if your car breaks down. Too many uneducated or low-performing employees working in technical positions, and promoted based on seniority rather than ability. Managers are former business analysts who know the healthcare system but not software development. Salaries all over the place. The development department has no methodologies or rhyme or reason for doing things--they just react. They do nothing but respond to program aborts every morning because the source code is a mess, written by questionable programmers, and nothing is ever done to clean it up and improve it for the long term. Instead, aborts are handled day by day with endless bandaids. New employees are blamed for failures, entrenched employees are given a free pass over and over again. If you confront an entrenched employee who has the ear of a manager, prepare to be given the boot as soon as the opportunity arises. Program updates moved into production without ANY testing. No QA department! Despite the fact that software breaks continuously and people are relying on their claims to be processed and ID cards to be printed. Nothing is ever done, just more bandaids. Deep wounds are never treated.
