Pros

Really smart people working towards an innovative mission of providing personalized health care to cancer. The overall work is challenging, but also very rewarding (based on my observations of other teams) when you look at the big picture and realize how far this company has gone since its inception 3 years ago.

Cons

I can only speak for the Jr. Data Analyst (JDA) position. If you are thinking about applying for this position, I would think really hard and careful before actually going through with the process. For one, the responsibilities of the job are incredibly monotonous. You will essentially be spending 40+ hours a week reviewing thousands of clinical documents electronically. Hardly exciting nor rewarding. In addition, the organization and structural operations of the team are in constant disarray; you will be told one thing one week, then told something completely different the next week. Management will then proceed to criticize you for following the previous weeks rules, even though they had never notified you of any changes beforehand. Management will also constantly talk down on you (as a JDA), wondering how you could be so inadequate, given how "smart you guys look on paper". The unfortunate actions of the JDA management have negatively impacted the JDA team as a whole, fostering an environment with almost zero camaraderie and career progression. I'll end with this: If you are a recent undergrad looking to apply to medical school/PhD, this will be a great position for you. If you can block out the incapabilities of management to provide a stimulating environment, and make the best out of the position, you will be set up will when it comes to leveraging your experiences at an innovative healthcare tech company during interviews. However.... If you are NOT looking to go to medical school/ PhD and are instead looking to build a career in analytics and/or business, STAY AWAY FROM THIS POSITION. There is absolutely no career progression, it's very difficult to transfer teams, and you will end up stuck reviewing clinical records during your whole time at Tempus. It's just not worth it given the job itself, and the constant belittling from management. Fortunately, I was able to leverage my "data analyst skills" into getting an offer for a position more aligned to my interests in early/mid 2018, and have been away from the turmoil since. I sure hope that things have changed for JDAs since then, but given my previous experiences there, I wouldn't be surprised if nothing has improved.

Pros

As mentioned work is great since it is cancer research and my coworkers are amazing. Immediate leadership managers and Sr. managers are good as well but somewhat unorganised. Work life balance is good also and health insurance as long as you get BCBS PPO with copay otherwise you're screwed paying off deductible.

Cons

Pay is below industry average, and there is essentially no room to negotiate a better raise. Employees are actively discouraged from discussing compensation, and whatever leadership decides is final, there are no exceptions. If you try to escalate concerns or request a conversation with senior leadership, such as a senior director or VP, you’ll quickly find yourself getting the runaround. Leadership prefers to hide behind layers of management rather than engage directly. There is also no clear or transparent path for career advancement. Opportunities technically exist, but they are extremely limited. You can do everything right, receive a top rating of 5 on your annual performance review, and still not be promoted to manager or see any meaningful improvement in compensation. To make matters worse, the billionaire CEO and founder has said things like, “Don’t worry about pay because we’re curing cancer.” Statements like that feel incredibly out of touch when employees are earning $50k–$60k a year and receiving annual raises of only about $2,000. On top of that, equity is almost impossible to obtain. You have to fight for even the possibility of it, because stock or equity compensation is reserved almost exclusively for the C-suite and directors, with virtually nothing available for employees below that level.
