Dr. Janet Szlyk is the most image-driven and selfish leader I've witnessed in my 30 years of employment.

A message from Dr. Janet Szlyk, President and CEO of the Chicago Lighthouse: Thank you for your feedback. I would like to offer a few words on behalf of The Chicago Lighthouse as a place of employment. This year, The Chicago Lighthouse, including myself, the Board of Directors, and the organization’s executive leadership team, has prioritized our workplace culture, gathering input and listening to Lighthouse employees to develop strategies to make this organization a best place to work. Earlier this year, we launched an agency-wide employee engagement survey, which asked every employee to provide anonymous and confidential feedback about our culture and areas of improvement. Using those survey results, we have begun a multi-year engagement strategy to address key issues that contribute to building and supporting a healthy, growing, and productive workforce. We are adopting new ways of communicating, creating alignment on vision and goals for the organization, and empowering our team members to have a voice and active involvement in contributing to the organization’s culture. I hope that you will lend your voice to this process, either through the initiatives that are underway or by reaching out directly and privately to our Chief Human Resources Officer, Mike Niccolai. Every employee’s input – including yours – is necessary and valuable to identify areas of improvement and to develop strategies to address those areas. I encourage everyone at The Lighthouse to be a part of this process. As the leader of The Chicago Lighthouse, I care deeply about maintaining the organization’s brand and 117-year history of excellence in assisting our area’s underserved communities. I am committed to advancing the organization’s critical work and strive to do this as effectively as possible, with empathy, passion, and deep concern for the communities we serve, including our employees. Please let us know your thoughts. Thank you, Janet

Pros

I have worked at The Lighthouse for almost 2 years, and I have never met so many people dedicated to serving our mission community of the blind, visually impaired, otherwise disabled and Veterans. The leadership, led by the CEO and the Board, is committed to improving our employees' experiences with the same level of commitment the employees have for our patients and clients. There has been significant progress since I started and it’s continuing, with staff guiding the priorities and discussion.

Cons

No place is perfect, but the organization has identified and invested in key areas for growth and development and is committed to improving our employees' experiences.

Thank you for taking the time to provide this review. We use this information to help inform our employee engagement efforts so that we can make The Chicago Lighthouse one of the best places to work in Chicago and the country. Our senior leadership and Board are committed to this goal and making improvements to our training programs, policies and communications practices. We thank you for recognizing the efforts we have made so far and know you will be pleased with those yet to come. As you said, our employees are our greatest asset, and we appreciate each and every one of you.

Pros

Working from home after training and weekly pay

Cons

The management style here leaves much to be desired. There’s excessive micromanaging by individuals who lack the leadership skills necessary to effectively guide a team. Decisions that could easily be communicated via Teams are instead handled through unnecessary disruptions, such as system pauses, which come across as attempts to assert authority rather than foster collaboration. Leadership isn't about exerting control—it's about inspiring and guiding teams toward success. Dr. Szlyk has clearly made great strides in building a strong foundation for the organization, but unfortunately, these efforts are being undermined by ineffective management practices. It’s disappointing to see such potential being squandered. True leadership requires trust, clear communication, and empowerment—none of which seem to be prioritized here.

Dear Employee, Thank you for your thoughtful and detailed response. We appreciate your feedback and take these comments seriously. As you may or may not know, we have made employee engagement and satisfaction a high priority over the past few years, and that includes employee management. One of our strategic goals for this year is to make a more concerted effort toward management training. We have already committed for all of our managers to have participated in management training by the end of the fiscal year (June 30, 2025), and we will continue with additional training through fiscal 2026 and beyond. This management training is one of the top priorities of our new Chief Operating Officer Brandie Knazze. We do appreciate your sharing concerns and recommendations for improvement. Please remember, you can also bring these concerns and suggestions directly to our Human Resources department.
