Good benefits, bad management - Systems Developer/Engineer The Ohio State University Employee Review

Pros

The best part about working for OSU are the benefits, particularly the educational ones. You can often get flex time to take classes.

Cons

As far as a career in IT goes, it is very limited. The raises are miniscule and there is not much room for advancement. OSU tends to be management-heavy. There is a 1:1 director/associate director to developer ratio in my department. Management's philosophy is that "you don't need a technical background to manage technology."

Pros

Great work life balance and accessible management

Cons

There are not many cons to working with the university except the pay was slightly lower than other competitive wages.

Pros

Many resources available for various types of studies

Cons

Unless your PI is tapped into the research community, the resources are spread out and difficult to find. The overall support from the University to PIs is limited. Those individuals in positions of authority are more concerned with their own optics than with supporting those who need it.
