Pros
I have been working with The Outreach Teams recruitment department but have also worked on their safety hotline and onboarding departments. Prior to working with TOT I was a canvasser, Lead Director and Regional Director for other campaigns. I truly believe TOT is the best that I've worked for. The Outreach Team has an amazing work culture that stems from a commitment to equity and inclusion, open communication and always trying to improve. It has resources and compensation for its staff that are frankly unheard of in the canvassing and organizing field. Whether it is a safety hotline for field staff to call into at any hour, a ton of accessible bonuses or a dedicated onboarding team there is just so much that TOT provides that you don't see anywhere else. The recruitment department grew quickly and with that growth came the opportunity to constantly improve and make changes where they were needed. There was so much communication about how we could improve our interview process, whether it was making the process more equitable and inclusive by prioritizing local candidates, improving the questions we asked or emphasizing diversity on the recruitment team and the interviewers. That candidness to reflect on areas of improvement and then genuinely address them is rare, especially amongst organizations that often preach progressive values but don't embody them internally. All of this is possible because there are such great people involved. TOT has so many great people involved. Whether it is field leadership or internal there are so many people involved that have decades of great experience. There is a kindness that people bring to this work that is unique and really makes it like a family.
Cons
Since TOT is still growing/adapting some of the changes we tried to implement took time. I just wish we could have started the campaigns with the systems we have in place now.
