Pros

For Ph.D.s you can get trained for a lucrative career in the life sciences. That can be in academics, or in industry. For those with a bachelors and masters degrees they have a more stable career track. Once established in a lab they can spend their entire career at the institute.

Cons

The jobs in academia are very competitive while the jobs in industry are very skill dependent. Industry goes through waves where some very specific skills are very much in demand. Most postdocs don't get that training. The training they receive may not lead to any career. In fact many Ph.D. move on to other careers.
