Pros

If you work here for 30+ years you’re guaranteed a beautiful retirement because of how their stocks work. Work trips, clothing allowance, good benefits, etc. The people are cool but fake. Extensive training. Base salary + commission for the first two years.

Cons

Easily can work 70-80 hours a week and still not be successful. Cold calling disguised as “not” cold calling. You have to call 85 people a day and input 55 prospects each day using a horrible script until you prove you’re successful. The short-term retention of employees is the worst I’ve seen for any company. They “strongly encourage” (basically put the paper in front of you and tell you to sign) new hires to sign a promissory note for clothing in the amount of $2000+ in MLM style to keep you employed at the company instead of paying off the promissory note in full when you quit. They manipulate you with nice sounding words and motivational speeches. Pressure to be and look perfect at all times. I’ve seen people at their worst mental health in this job. Christian values pushed on employees by top management. If you’re BIPOC and/or in the LGBTQ+ community, you might feel alone in this company. It is dominated by white upper middle class Christians.

We are sorry to hear you had a negative experience. Our mission and desire is to develop people to their full potential, and do so in a way that promotes dignity, respect, fun, and a safe and positive family-like culture. As a heavily commission-based opportunity, there is no doubt that we are a performance-oriented environment. However, it is not our culture or values for this to be a negative pressure. For this reason, we place our emphasis on developing goals and desires—things that people want to achieve for themselves, not because someone else is pressuring them to do so. We believe people will work hardest and most creatively to achieve the life they want for themselves and their loved ones. There are just a couple of things we would like to point out from a factual standpoint just for a balanced understanding on a few topics: We do not expect 70+ hour work weeks from our new partners. In general, this is not our management style. It is TRUE that many of the people we attract choose to work very hard in their first years of building their clientele. Our belief is that if we help people develop goals for the life they want to build, and help them develop an activity plan to accomplish those goals, they will use both their work ethic and their efficiency/creativity to figure out how to achieve them on a monthly basis. While it does take hard work to get your business off the ground here, it is not our culture to enforce a specific hourly requirement. No one is ever required to purchase Tom James clothing. Like most companies, we offer our products at heavy discounts to our employees. However, by no means do we require employees to participate. Business-essential prospecting tools are provided free of charge to employees, and advanced tools are available on an optional basis for significantly less than the contracted amount. This, too, is common in sales. Our role is to help them develop skills, habits and other ideas that will help people achieve their goals, and that is where we spend our time. If you would like to discuss your experience further, please contact us at careerdivision@tomjames.com. We would be happy to listen more and address internally to the extent there are opportunities to do better for others. Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We wish you all the best.

Pros

Not only is there unlimited opportunity/commission, but there’s unlimited personal development. The leaders constantly are challenging me to think with principles, think big for my goals, and giving me resources to achieve those goals. The people I get to serve for my clients are to top division makers, influencers, and income earners in Austin and I’m honored that they trust us to serve them.

Cons

Building a business requires thinking big, thinking strategically, and getting out of my comfort zone. As with any business, the better you do the more problems you face and are challenges to solve.
