Pros

CEO is inspirational and a great leader to follow. The pay and benefits are solid. Generous PTO

Cons

Impossible to use your PTO with the stockpile of work they expect from you. Heightened volume with Covid and unprecedented social stress makes this line of work even tougher but management does not seem to care, does not provide a raise if you are behind even when you are working your hardest with the extra amount of work you have AND have the audacity to beg for help with the influx of call volume and CAT claims. Trainer is abusive and you will trauma bond with your fellow trainees from it. Micromanagement is the norm here. Gossip and politics are high here and even with the open door policy you are encouraged to use, if you speak of any concerns they will do absolutely nothing but make you feel like it’s you who’s the problem. There is a big fear culture that is also nurtured around this office where there is an unwritten rule constantly echoed by everyone, including in training, where they say that should you ever leave Travelers, you can never come back. I’ve seen hard workers who have given years of their lives and find other jobs being given the cold shoulder by management and not even given a “I wish you all the best”. This seems insane to me as you would think if someone was a good worker and tries something else but misses Travelers that you would welcome them back but that doesn’t seem to be the case here. We are even sent to walk with a colleague to tell us not to actually bring anything up in town halls or one on one meetings with execs when they come to visit because we’re told they don’t actually want us to say our concerns, they just want us to show we are ok with drinking the koolaid here and nothing more. If you want to apply and try for different depts while in claims, they will straight up tell you that you will not get it and need at least a minimum of 5 years or more in your role. They want to squeeze as much out of you while they can before even allowing you to try for other roles, even if you feel you would be a better fit elsewhere and even then you have to threaten to quit before they take you seriously.

Pros

We receive continuous training to stay up to date with new state regulations and market trends. My colleagues make the day go by quickly. The benefits are very reasonable. There is room for career growth if you know how to network. I appreciate their consistent push for community volunteer opportunities.

Cons

The personal lines department seems to be falling apart right now. Issues with the internal systems are resulting in underwriters doing multiple jobs and becoming a dumping ground for all agent issues even if they aren't underwriting related. I don't feel that the directors are truly expressing to the senior leadership team the impact that all these issues are having on the mental health and quality of life for the employees that are on the front lines trying to maintain a good reputation for the company. It's sad to see how quickly this department has gone downhill and the amount of quality underwriters that are jumping ship for different departments or different companies all together. What's even sadder it that no one with authority seems to care, or listen, when concerns are brought forth. I truly advise anyone considering applying for any position within the personal insurance department to hold off until things start to change - it's not worth the mental anguish that you'll experience.
