Fine job, unit culture sucks - Crime Scene Specialist Tucson Police Department Employee Review

Pros

It's an interesting, meaningful job with good benefits. Most of the supervisers are very invested in your professional development and Alison was a great boss.

Cons

The overall culture of the unit sucks. People are generally lazy and don't want to do anything. There were a lot of people who would complain about having to take calls because they "weren't serious enough" and that a CSO could easily do that. A lot of non-casework tasks like office chores get dumped onto one or two people. We have ride alongs often, usually students, and their are a few people who straight up refuse to have anything to do with them. The problems are particularly bad on the swing shift. It's also a lot of women in the unit and a few of them pick on others in the office. There's a lot of passive aggressiveness and there's one particular click that I watched gang up on multiple people. I often overheard them talking crap about people behind their backs. In addition, there's a lot of retaliatory behvaior and covert harrassment. The worst ones know how to do it in a way that you'll get in trouble if you try to escalate to OPS because you can't prove anything. Basically, you can't trust very many people here and people will do the bare minimum (if at all) of being a "team player" with you if they decide they don't like you. If you want to be surrounded by snakes with poor work ethics who complain that they're not paid enough, this is pretty much the place to be.
