Pros

1. Friendly atmosphere, lots of cross training opportunity 2. Lots of Holidays that can be used to comp time. 3. Working for government is easy when you have defined task not when you're in decision making authority. 4. Pension is okay but they deduct almost 10% and pay 2% interest

Cons

1. Sometimes you feel your valued 30-40% less than private sector on salary. 2. Middle and older people get lot less than newly hired moderately experienced Engineers which is unfair, especially Houston District pays lot less than other metros on salary for same task, title and responsibilities. Biggest project size than other districts but still less pay for same responsibilities. 3. Sometimes lesser growth opportunities for risk of lower pay 4. Longer Vesting period with tiny 2% on our monies and unlike other agencies which allow as low as 5 years of pension vesting.

Pros

Good health insurance, vacation and sick leave! No mandatory overtime

Cons

Hired remote before Covid and this agency ended all telework even though other state agencies kept it! Doing the work of 3 people but pay for 1 …building outdated (except for HQ in Austin), lack of modern software but PeopleSoft gets the job done, High mandatory pension deductions right at 9.5% big hit to paycheck! Getting paid once a month big adjustment. Ending telework really limits their talent pool around the state of Texas now must live in Austin if you want access to the majority of good jobs.
