Pros
It forces a kid to grow up. If one takes ones role seriously, you can really learn a lot, and mature to the point of becoming a very marketable asset to someone else in the future. If you don't know what to do, then do 4 years in the military.
Cons
When people get stressed, it roles down hill. Generally the leadership directly over you has your best interest in mind. Like all places, sometimes you find that real jerk who just wish would quit or die, but that isn't the norm in my experience.
