Ready access to large data sets with interesting problems to work on, not many people with the background necessary to tackle them.
Cons
Laughably incompetent H.R. / payroll departments, often to the financial detriment of Census's employees - expect them to waste both your time and your money. Awful in-house software. Painfully limited computational resources, even for teams working on problem's at the cusp of what's solvable with modern algorithms.
