Pros

I’ve worked for USDM Life Sciences for several years in various contracted roles, all principally involving Computerized Systems Validation (CSV) and Project Management (PM) of respective activities for many Life Sciences clients. Most of these projects have required frequent or full-time, on-site presence, but I have also enjoyed considerable, rewarding project work that I performed largely remotely. To accomplish this so consistently, I appreciated that USDM readily provided a great deal of genuine support and coordination with other USDM colleagues and expert peers. Personally, I've quite enjoyed the many opportunities to work with multiple client companies and project groups worldwide. Although I was not seeking any particular career development opportunities, I believe that USDM provides a healthy and encouraging environment for professional development. In general, an internal PM is assigned for each project so that an expert can more readily focus on client needs without undue attention required for time- and budget-tracking or other contract or administrative duties. This model also enables the client to interact with the PM as often as necessary to ensure effective communications and task deliveries. Otherwise, USDM leverages and promotes expanding use of a wide range of technical capabilities enabled in large part by Microsoft Office 365, Salesforce applications and cloud communications, computing and storage technologies, both internally and for a growing base of clients. Although I did not often have sufficient opportunities to meet some of my USDM colleagues face to face, I’ve always felt part of a professional and sociable team that would consistently deliver best results for our many clients. Now that I’ve accepted a new role with a different company, I still feel that I am part of the USDM family. Indeed, I certainly expect to remain in touch and collaborate with USDM colleagues and friends.

Cons

There really were no significantly negative aspects for me while working for USDM other than perhaps the potential uncertainties inherent in working under contract for variable periods of time for our clients. That is, it is ultimately the client that dictates their changing needs to us as the provider of expert resources; and sometimes the client does not always understand what is best. This sort of “downside” is really only an acknowledgement of the environment in which you agree to work as part of a consultant organization. Realistically, it is the client who must first propose or establish a reasonable budget and timeframe for work that we, as experts, can respond to and agree to deliver as much as possible. If you are consulting, I am presuming that you already have significant expertise and experience that is really worth sharing. USDM works hard to match experts with the job at hand and then to manage projects and communications very effectively so that reasonable tasks are accomplished and coordinated on time. As a consultant it is not always possible to be available for all potential clients, and it is likely that the more rewarding contracts will not be available at any given time. In fact, there may be uncomfortably lengthy periods of downtime during which no suitable client contract is available. Some other consulting firms often imply that sufficient work is always available to remain fully employed at all times; however, I did not expect USDM to always have my next assignment at the ready once the current one was completed. Everyone’s situation is of course different; in my case, I usually restricted myself to only local clients unless the bulk of any proposed work could be performed remotely. Indeed, I enjoyed at least one interesting project where I traveled afar (out of the U.S.) only a few times while performing most of the work from home; but I would gladly work with USDM and that client again in the future, traveling as needed.

USDM Life Sciences Response

Thank you very much for your detailed response, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I am glad you got to experience both working on our projects team and then a contract with one of our clients. You were able to explore both worlds and show you have the versatility to work in different Business Units! It is always a top priority to find our team members a new project once their project ends. We work hard to get you into the best possible role. We appreciate your suggestions of expansion in other industries and your confidence that we would flourish. At this point, we are focusing in the Life Science domain only and working diligently to continuously innovate to maintain our leadership position in the industry. Once again thank you for all your words, much appreciated and please know that you will always be part of our USDM family!

Pros

Work/life balance is solid if you can manage your time and do your job Pay is competitive Some colleagues are great to work with

Cons

Majority of good colleagues have left the organization in last couple of years Abusive CEO who isn't afraid to call out and berate employees in front of others. Dysfunction has spread across organization from the top down What made the company reputable and special were the ex employees who left because of the CEO's lack of leadership and abuse. Vague commission structure and unclear payouts Unclear responsibilities across the board leads to day-to-day confusion
