Pros

UncommonGoods hires the best people, hands down. They are fun, talented, driven, and very hard working.

Cons

Most people aren't paid anywhere near what they are worth, they do not get titles they should be given, and they are overall treated as garbage, to easily be disposed of, so another, cheaper, employee can take their place.

I'm happy to hear that your view of our team members is such a strong one. However, I don't feel like I am in a position to address the feedback you have given without seeming like I'm doing a poor impression of a PR or Customer Service person. Luckily our leadership structure is set up in a way that I could approach Dave (our Founder/CEO who is always looking for feedback and ways to improve himself and the company) to get his thoughts. Here is his response, "Treating every single member of our team with dignity and respect is the most important thing we do at UncommonGoods. And making sure our team feels that way is equally important. We don't always succeed and, in this case, we clearly didn't. I am sorry for that. For 18 years, I have met with every new team member, seasonal or year-round, in order to reinforce this culture of caring about everyone at the company. Every manager participates in a rigorous 360-degree review process. Promotions are earned by achieving agreed-upon performance and development milestones. Reaching those goals is a responsibility of the individual, supported by the manager and our company. If you didn't get there, it is a disappointment for all of us." Dave's response matches well with what I have experienced in my years here. Note: I told Dave that he didn't need to address the "trekking out to the middle of nowhere" comment because the N/R line and the new NYC Ferry (that we helped successfully advocate for) have made commuting a breeze for many of our traveling team members. The Rockaway Ferry has made it so that it is only 15 minutes from Wall St., and another ferry route starting in June will make it easier to travel to/from DUMBO, Red Hook, Brooklyn Bridge Park, and a few other places. This not too shabby of a commute; particularly when coupled with our year-round team member transit benefits and subsidy. Best, Sean
