UncommonGoods is a company that cares deeply about their team members…except when they don’t.
Once a manager decides that you’re not part of the club or essential to the future of the brand, they’ll do anything to force you out, including, but not limited to: Setting you up to fail through arbitrary or half-baked direction, micro-managing you to an effective halt, and threatening you with poorly documented performance issues. Make no mistake: Everyone—with the possible exception of upper management—is expendable. This may be the harsh reality of business in general, but it’s not in keeping with UncommonGoods’ do-good focus on its people (which the company crows about every chance it gets).
And if you do find yourself in a dispute with your manager, don’t expect the company’s laughably incompetent HR department to do anything about it (except amaze you with their ineptitude and poor communication). The Founder/CEO and some managers are deeply dedicated to the company and have very good intentions, but the culture that’s emerged despite their dedication is uncommonly toxic in my experience.
