Pros
Tutor at middle school in the county. Love my job and all the pros of teaching without the cons on most days. No grading, contacting parents, minimal lesson planning, no sun needed if I’m out. Get sick pay and annual leave, which accumulate based on hours. No benefits offered to date, but we’ll see if that changes.
Cons
Working for the county has good and bad with it. Some decisions they make aren’t the best. They like to move teachers and admin from one side of the county to the other without asking. If you understand the diversity and width of the county, you understand how big of a deal that is; especially if you have kids. If you do have children, you get to choose what county school they go to, or they can come with you to your school, which is the best perk. The state got rid of retirement insurance (after 2 years, you kept your free state insurance until Medicare kicked in, which was an awesome perk, but as all things good it also got ripped away from teachers). To me, it’s a great job because it’s more flexible with less demand than full-time teaching, and I still get to do what I love.
