Pros

+ Relatively modern tech stack, utilizing tools to do awesome things from big data analysis, to computer vision. + Lots of different software projects under way, a lot of which are very interesting and difficult. + Stable company. Despite a small recent round of layoffs, Union Pacific well outperforms major tech companies that tend to layoff a significant percentage of employees every year or two.

Cons

+ Some areas of the company aren't held to as high of standards as others, and may use older tech stacks + Some departments are your average "IT Software Projects" that any major company has, that aren't nearly as interesting as the railroad specific projects. + On the low side of pay, mostly only yearly inflation raises unless the company is doing well. + When a project is considered "business critical" it's extremely difficult to move off that team if your interests change

Pros

There are several pros working for Union Pacific. Pros are the pay, union membership, and opportunities to travel

Cons

Cons are also Travel. The shift I am on you are supposed to be gone for eight d ays and home for six. But it actually translates into gone for 9 1/2 days by the time you include your travel days which put you only home for 4 to 4 1/2 days every 14 days.
