Pros
So many great people. There are opportunities to make changes if you're a self-starter. There are pockets of excellence all over. There are a few really good executives doing the right thing.
Cons
Executive leadership operates like game of thrones. Lots of dysfunctional behavior. Bad practice of antiquated management techniques. Silo behavior is the norm. Many malevolent people are protected and put into positions of senior leadership. Competency has little bearing in senior leadership assignments. The financial "discipline" squeezes water from pennies. So while you are hearing that the company is fiscally doing great, you can expect to not even get a cost of living raise. The business is mostly run by bureaucrats who reward compliance over performance. So many executives sit in their private offices and summon audiences to them without understanding how things work 2 or 3 levels down. You may need to apply for a role above your pay grade if you want a promotion; it's actually much easier than getting a promotion (thanks again to the finance bureaucrats). Bonuses come only once per year. They can be quite generous, but only really apply to what was in your manager's most recent memory of you, and they are highly discretionary in nature. As a matter of policy, remote work is discouraged. Some good leaders disregard that policy. We aren't empowered to hire or retain bright people, but we're so big that we've got some anyway. I expect we could cut half of our workforce, many executives and non value-add roles, and be a remarkably more successful company.
