Pros

Had amazing travel benefits while on the long haul team Great CE opportunities and funding CEO is personable and cares about employees Encouraged to learn and grow

Cons

-Very local management dependent, but mine was so bad that we had almost 100% turnover within a few months of opening - including management! They will work you to the bone, guilt you into working when you're sick "because they can't find coverage", schedule you for day shifts immediately after night shifts and completely mess up your circadian rhythm. They will not accommodate schedule requests unlike other ERs where you can work a set schedule every week. -There seems to be an infinite amount of meetings, emails, and workchats you're expected to attend and respond to when you're off duty. -There is no sense of work/life balance. You either totally buy in to the VEG lifestyle or you're "not a good culture fit". -They hire inexperienced staff that make medical mistakes (to no fault of their own - they're just new grads that are way overwhelmed with no support provided) but YOU will get the blame of it and be at risk of losing your license as the DVM. -Constant interruptions with phone calls, triages, emails etc. -Inexperienced CECs calling "STAT" for obviously non-stat cases (which is also not their fault, they just didn't receive appropriate training). -They advertise GSAFF (give stuff away for free) and VEG Cares but local management gets mad when you GSAFF outside of their arbitrary standard, and they seemingly approve and deny VEG Cares cases with no logical reasoning. Then they blame their staff for things that are clearly management's fault. -Always understaffed, often will not have CEC at all so the one nurse and one doctor available also have to answer phone calls, open the doors, check clients in, all while smiling and offering coffee and water. And taking care of the hospitalized patients and incoming patients... it's just an impossible ask. -Fired 5 very good staff within a few months when we were already short staffed.. but kept very toxic staff who are actually a liability (lie on medical records, assistants who diagnose) -So overwhelmingly toxic that you become a shell of who you were. All my mental and physical health issues went away after I left. There is no amount of money that is worth working at this hospital for.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We’re truly sorry to hear how challenging your time was at VEG; this is not the experience we want for any of our VEGgies. Emergency medicine is demanding by nature, but it should never come at the cost of your physical health, mental wellbeing, or professional safety, and we take these concerns seriously. Even though you’ve moved on, your perspective is important as we reflect on how we can best support our hospitals and leaders. If you’re open to continuing the conversation, we welcome you to reach out to stephaniedemars@veg.vet so we can learn from this and work to ensure others do not have the same experience.

Pros

Clients get to stay with their pets-this is so beneficial for helping the patients feel reassured and comforted during their stay.

Cons

The work ethic of the support staff is deplorable. There is chronic laziness throughout the staff (except for a few staff members who consistently work hard). VEG is known for hiring really young DVMs, and although they complete the 1 yr NERD program, many come out unprepared, are practicing medicine without continued mentorship, make grave medical errors, misdiagnose, and are incompetent surgeons.
