Pros
Reasonable base pay Good pay for being on call Good health insurance Good equipment in my department Enjoyed my co-workers
Cons
I did not like parking off-site and the shuttle bus drivers are not safe often times talking on their cell phones. I even saw one employee using an e-cigarette on the shuttle bus one time. There are so many spaces reserved for Physicians that rarely get filled even during the day shift. My manager liked to use fear and intimidation as the method of "managing". At one department meeting we were all told we were expected to advance our certificates. If we were unsuccessful at passing registry exams, we would "no longer be working in the lab". We were told they would find other jobs for us in the hospital. How short-sighted to toss aside skilled, experienced technicians without a plan for helping us be successful! Of course there was nothing mentioned for a pay increase or bonus for obtaining another registry. On another occasion, I discovered employee reviews on a shared drive within the department. I was shocked as I thought these things were supposed to be confidential. I took both of these concerns to HR. I was told the employee reviews would be removed from the shared drive immediately. As for the change of our job descriptions, I was blown off and told to talk to the manager's boss. I didn't feel it was my job to reign in managers on a power trip. Don't plan on getting much vacation time. Any time there is low census, you'll be sent home which will come out of your PTO. Any time your department is closed, it comes out of your PTO. Holidays? Comes out of your PTO. Gravely ill immediate family members? PTO. Death in the family in another state? Three bereavement days, but then PTO. I worked there for almost three years and was never able to take a solid week off. Sick? Try not to be. Your manager will encourage you to come in anyway because of short-staffing. At least that what this manager did. Performance review? Mine was just a bunch of "Superior" boxes checked off with not one single comment. It's as if it was pre-filled and simply copied for all the employees in the department. She was very good at criticizing and humiliating us publicly in front of co-workers about things we did wrong. Yet she could not come up with any positive remarks despite marking off "Superior" in all the categories. No incentive for continuing education. VHC does not give ANY education money to attend conferences or workshops for allied health professionals.
