Pros
Chance to work with a variety of equipment, and not be pigeon-holed into one narrow area. Technical staff are usually skilled, easy to get along with, and try to help the students when they can; they are the reason anything actually is accomplished.
Cons
Stress. There is intense pressure to do "more, more, more." Extreme under-staffing & high turnover rates. Little chance for career advancement. Ironically, lack of commitment to professional education. Bureaucracy.
