Pros

- Pay and benefits are moderately better than market standard. - Most employees are friendly, worldly, congenial, talented, and passionate about what they do. - Many staff are from other countries or have traveled extensively -- a truly global workplace. - Back Bay location is great, and office is modern and well-appointed.

Cons

VHL is a young company that, for years, has enjoyed a level of success disproportionate to its small size. Recently, the CEO has eviscerated the company with round after round of seemingly arbitrary firings, layoffs, and role eliminations (including the president of the company). No explanation has been given other than "we're growing as a company." Which doesn't make sense, given our total # of employees is small and getting smaller by the day, while workload continues to increase. Most of these departures have not been backfilled -- responsibilities just keep getting reassigned to remaining staff, many of whom do not have the required knowledge, qualifications, or bandwidth to adequately fulfill those responsibilities. Quantitative and qualitative output have taken a nose dive as skilled and long-serving employees take their knowledge with them when they get kicked out the door -- and right over to our competitors. The resulting atmosphere is reminiscent of the final act of Titanic. There are still good, committed people here, but their proportion of the workforce has been overbalanced by a mixture of CEO-toadying sycophants and go-along-to-get-along types who are hoping to fly under the radar until retirement (or, at least, a decent severance package). This company used to be and still could be a great publisher and a wonderful place to work, but every day it seems less and less likely that we will survive this poorly managed transition into full-blown corporatehood.

Pros

Working in this company has been both challenging and rewarding. Not only do I continuously learn and grow, but I also get to contribute to making education more accessible and convenient—especially for students who lack the means to pursue formal schooling or live in remote areas. My work here feels purposeful, and I’m proud to be part of a team that leverages advanced technology to create a positive impact

Cons

nothing to share about it

Pros

There are plenty of benefits that employees actually enjoy. The commuter pass and parking program, weekly catered lunches, fitness reimbursement, and the training and other development opportunities.

Cons

The CEO and his management were so focused on making profits, forgetting about balance, the real vision, and company priorities. The current problems were blatantly ignored while taking advantage of employees, neglecting our well being, losing the work-life balanced we were promised! The outcome was overworked, stressed, and unhappy employees who felt frustrated at work which also affected performance in a terrible way! Instead of actually talking about the decline in performance and resolving the real problem, we were blamed for it and even pressured to perform better! If one would suggest decreasing our load, management would take that against you and accuse you of being incompetent! The CEO being obsessed with getting higher results, will immediately fire anyone who's underperforming and couldn't qualify their insane standards! Fear is the thing that drives people to keep on no matter how exhausting work gets from the continuous increase of workload, no matter how unreasonable it is. No one wants to get fired just like that, without any back up plan. The job is enjoyable, coworkers were great, and students were a joy to teach. It's just the leadership that makes this company terrible!
