Pros

Only thing that's good is their eggs and some of the most hard-working workers at their production plant.

Cons

Top management is completely clueless and act as so. Lack of good benefits (Some people get more than others as the HR rules on benefits doesn't apply to every department, no concrete rules) Lack of communication in this company is overwhelming. Lack of structure (training and resources too) and processes within all departments. Lack of structured systems =extreme manual work Management including HR department plays favorite with people, if you are not in their "kool aid" group, you will get poor incentives and most likely, be fired. It is very obvious who comes first, it is mainly people from, HR, Recruiting, Sales, Marketing, and Innovation departments. Management continues to lie and hides true facts because they want to make it seem as everything is/runs smooth. Management lacks to promote people within and rather hire people who come from/graduated out of "bigger" companies/supposedly prestigious companies-universities because they believe that those people will change the path. Meanwhile, they lack faith and no incentives given for the people that do the actual hard work. Wrong people get incentivized and promoted fast constantly. Company is quick to hire consultants rather invest in a full time person who is truly needed in certain departments. As this company went public, the top management team is now well off/cuhsy positions; there is a very mere possibility that their "extreme old fashioned HR policies" will ever change. You are better working for an ethical food company that truly supports their people first simultaneously makes "actual" changes in the food industry.

Vital Farms Response

At Vital Farms, our values are to Be Humble, Lead with a Growth Mindset, Act Like an Owner, and Practice Empathy. We strive to create a culture that embodies these values in all that we do. This includes closely reviewing difficult feedback like what you’ve shared and taking the time to address these comments both internally and with you. We are working to add new benefits to our package (current benefits are listed here) and we actively seek feedback from our crew on offerings that would be meaningful to them. This work takes time, but we are committed to evolving our benefits offerings. We want our crewmembers to feel that they can build a career at Vital Farms. This includes providing clarity on roles/responsibilities, goal-setting, quarterly conversations to evaluate performance against these goals, and creating a path for crewmembers to advance within the organization. We always strive to communicate frequently and transparently. Though COVID has created an additional challenge, we have created several touchpoints to keep our crew connected to each other as well as all of the work taking place across the company. We want to be sure our crew feels informed and aligned to our growth strategy as an organization. Finally, professional development is important to us—we know we will not empower our crew to Lead with a Growth Mindset or Act Like an Owner if we do not provide resources to learn and grow as professionals. This year we launched our learning portal, Cluck University, which offers a wide range of online trainings all intended to help our crew broaden their perspective and learn new skills. For our crewmembers at Egg Central Station, we have dedicated time slots for associates to take training courses during their shift. We are offering this additional information not to be defensive, but to provide clarity on how we’re thinking about the many topics addressed in your post. We would like to hear more about your experience to understand how we can do better. Please reach out to Julia Bonaventure, our Sr Manager of Talent, if you’d like to share more.

Pros

On the positive side, you’ll meet a lot of great people throughout the company. The flexible time off is appreciated and helps with work-life balance. The quarterly perks and discounts on company products are also a nice benefit for employees.

Cons

There are several concerns when it comes to leadership and company culture. There seems to be a major disconnect between employees, managers, and higher-level leadership, including some C-level executives. HR often appears to favor underperforming employees instead of holding them accountable, which can be frustrating for strong performers. There is also a noticeable lack of direction, consistency, and accountability among managers across multiple departments. While the company talks a lot about its values, those values do not always seem to apply equally at the Director, VP, and Chief levels. Leadership needs to address these issues and remove ineffective leaders before more hardworking and high-performing employees decide to leave for better opportunities elsewhere. Favoritism also appears to be a significant issue within the company culture. In some cases, underperforming employees or leaders are protected instead of being held accountable, which negatively impacts morale and trust across teams. There also seems to be a pattern of bringing in ineffective leaders from other companies whose management styles do not align with the company’s stated values, further contributing to cultural decline. If leadership wants to retain strong employees and improve the workplace environment, there needs to be a more honest evaluation of performance, accountability, and leadership effectiveness at every level of the organization.
