Pros

With a good team of supervisors and management, working for Vons as a bagger can be a very positive experience for a first job. Part time employees are protected under the union and offered excellent benefits with schedule flexibility and break accommodations. Between certain hours the store is always busy and regular waves between down time and hard work offers just the right amount to help the day pass quickly. The management is open to helping you move up an progress if you are a hard worker.

Cons

Very high turnover rate in certain positions; bad management means a hard time when the store gets busy. You are forced to wear professional uniforms including a tie alongside several other dress code restrictions. Some employees and customers can and will be old and/or cranky. When the store gets really busy, you may get exhausted.

Pros

Excellent, straightforward, comprehensive training program and learning modules to ramp up quickly. Management was reasonable and attentive. It was welcoming and I felt respected, and gave my all as a result. They also make sure people don't stay longer or go without a break after the 5-hour mark; this is a California statute with which I was unfamiliar (I was guilty of working long hours without a lunch break in CT due to

Cons

This likely comes with the territory, but a significant percentage of the target customer demographic are of the needlessly disrespectful, uncivil, infantile, entitled, and rich variety. They contrive conflict and attempt to pin it on the workers, or needlessly change their order after it has been obtained. It is child's play. Company policy says to never call the police unless they are a threat to safety, but they absolutely do disturb the peace and ruin the experience for others. It doesn't help that there is an expensive (not necessarily upscale in terms of class) drinking establishment in the same plaza.
