Yes you're left alone to get the job done, but you're given no formal training, and really no direction, so you have to learn everything on your own. I thought at first not having someone constantly hovering over me was a good thing, but then I found out that my direct boss would just show up unannounced once every few months. It was almost like he was looking to find something going wrong. After multiple years I just kept catching him in lie after lie after lie, he couldn't be trusted, he'd just tell you what you'd want to hear to keep you slaving away for him while he raked in a high salary and perks.
